Volunteer Call Taker
Get involved as a volunteer call taker
If you’re over 18 and reside in our operational areas, the emergency call taker position may interest you.
An Emergency Call Taker should be a friendly, calm-natured person over 18 years old. We answer the emergency phone during rostered shifts (typically 3-hour slots where you are on standby to answer the phone when it rings). If you can remain polite and calm over the phone but with a sense of urgency, regardless of the caller’s behaviour, you will be well suited to volunteer. You can volunteer remotely; you only need a smartphone with a reliable internet connection. We provide all training and support to help you succeed. As this is a volunteer position, there is no monetary compensation.
For volunteer call takers, the requirements are:
- A medical qualification of Level 1 first aid (or higher)
- Copy of identity document
- Access to a smartphone and a reliable internet connection
- Able to remain calm under pressure
